Rail plays a major role in the decarbonisation of the economy and thus contributes to save the planet
Rail currently accounts for 18% of freight transport in Europe. However, the objective set by the European Commission is to reach 30% by 2030 (compared to 1990). There is therefore real room for improvements for rail freight in terms of market share.
MEPs and Member States have agreed on the Green Deal. This text sets the target of reducing emissions in 2030 to at least 55%, while increasing the contributions of carbon removals, which could bring the target to 57%, compared to 1990 levels.
The ambition of the EU Green Deal is to make Europe climate neutral by 2050, by boosting the economy through a green economy, sustainable industry and pollution reduction.
Rail represents*:
– 3 times less noise pollution
– 6 times less energy consumed
– 8 times less air pollution (other than CO2)
– 9 times less CO2 emissions
